Ask the Vet-A monthly section of questions and answers 1.) How often should I have my horses teeth floated? What are the benefits of it? Do all vets float teeth? What should it cost? Dr. Veneklasen "You need to check every 6 months but not all horses need it that often.  In Texas, you need to be under the supervision of a vet to float your horses teeth. The cost of a float should be based on how much time is spent and how much work is needed. Floating your horses teeth can potentially improve both his health and performance." 2.) What is the normal temperature of a horse? What should his heart rate be when he is resting?
Dr. Veneklasen
"Your horse's temperature should be above 98 degrees and below 101 degrees. His resting heart rate should be 35."
3.) What is the difference between bute and ban amine?
Dr. Veneklasen
"Both of these medications are nsaids. They are both effective anti-inflammatory. Bute is a relatively weak anti-pyretic and is indicated as an aid in relieving inflammation involving the musculoskeletal system. Banamine is also an effective analgesic but it especially works well on colic pain."
