Ask the Vet-A monthly section of questions and answers 1.) 1.) What is VS (vesicular stomatitis)? Why do some states not allow horses with it into other states? Dr. Veneklasen “Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease that can affect horses, swine, cattle and other ruminants. It causes affected animals to develop blisters in the mouth and on the dental pad, hooves, and teats. These blisters swell and break, leaving raw tissue that causes affected animals to become lame and to refuse food and water. Because this disease’s symptoms are similar to foot and mouth disease, states are careful not to allow animals to travel state-to-state with VS. Foot and mouth disease is a devastating foreign disease that was eradicated from the United States in 1929.” 2.) What can I do to make sure that my horse is drinking enough water during the summer? Dr. Veneklasen “Make sure that you stop frequently and offer your horse water. It is also important that they have plenty to eat. This encourages them to drink properly.” 3.) What is the best way to prevent flies from being on my horse? What product works the best? Dr. Veneklasen
“Pyranha is probably the best product out there. It seems to stay on a horse better than other similar products. It is the only spray that we use and recommend. Apply two times a day depending on where you live.”
