section of questions and answers
1.)
What spring vaccinations do you recommend, and is my horse still at risk
for the West Nile Virus?
Dr. Veneklasen
“I recommend giving your horse several different vaccines in order to protect
him from various threats: East/West, tetnus, flu rhino, rabbies,
and strangles. Also, there still is the need for the West Nile virus
booster. Your veterinarian can advise you of the risk factors depending
on where you live. By giving these vaccinations, your horse should
be protected as you travel to various ropings/rodeos.”
2.)
What about a good wormer for the spring?
Dr. Veneklasen
“There are a number of effective oral wormers on the market. I would
recommend one with ivermectin given in the spring and the fall. This
will take care of the bots. For the other months, I would advise
you to rotate other products. Worms are a tremendous problem for
horses. Your horse should be wormed every 60-90 days. Finally,
there are daily wormers that work well.”
3.)
How often should I unload my horse out of the trailer when I’m going to
a roping/rodeo?
Dr. Veneklasen
“First of all, it is important for you to wrap their lower legs.
This protects them from injury in the trailer, as well as giving them support.
On a long trip (more than 10 hours), I would recommend unloading every
4-6 hours of travel. On shorter trips, it is not needed.”
